Rainbows and Moonbeams

Intent

At Rainbows and Moonbeams, we believe that every child deserves access to an ambitious, meaningful and highly personalised curriculum that enables them to thrive. The Sensory Curriculum Subject Pathways form the foundation of our curriculum design, ensuring that pupils access a broad and balanced range of learning experiences appropriate to their individual developmental stage, communication needs and learning profile.

Our aim is to develop confident, engaged and independent learners who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for future learning and everyday life. We recognise that our pupils learn best through practical, sensory-rich and experiential opportunities; therefore, the Subject Pathways ensure that learning is purposeful, relevant and accessible whilst maintaining high expectations for all.

While many pupils access learning through the Sensory Curriculum pathways, some pupils are working within the National Curriculum but are not yet ready to access learning at their chronological age expectations. For these pupils, the Subject Pathways work alongside National Curriculum objectives, enabling carefully matched learning that builds on prior knowledge, closes gaps in understanding and ensures strong progression from individual starting points. This allows all pupils to experience success whilst continuing to work towards age-related curriculum content where appropriate.

The pathways support us in developing the whole child by placing equal importance on communication, emotional regulation, personal development, physical development, independence and academic achievement. Through carefully planned learning experiences, pupils are encouraged to explore, communicate, make choices, build relationships and develop an understanding of the world around them.

Implementation

Across Rainbows and Moonbeams, the Subject Pathways are used to inform long-term planning, topic development and daily teaching. Teachers use the progression frameworks to identify pupils' starting points and plan learning that builds systematically upon previous knowledge and experiences.

Learning is delivered through a combination of structured teaching, sensory exploration, play-based learning, Attention Autism approaches, communication-focused activities and real-world experiences. Topics are carefully selected to provide engaging contexts for learning while ensuring clear progression across all curriculum areas.

Staff use the pathways to identify the key skills, knowledge and vocabulary that pupils need to develop within each subject. For pupils accessing the National Curriculum outside of their year group expectations, learning objectives are carefully matched to individual attainment levels, ensuring that curriculum content remains ambitious whilst being achievable. This approach allows pupils to secure fundamental knowledge and skills before moving on to more complex concepts.

Lessons are adapted through a range of scaffolds, communication supports and sensory approaches to ensure all pupils can participate successfully and experience achievement. Opportunities to develop communication, social interaction, problem-solving and independence are woven throughout the school day and embedded across subjects.

The four-year curriculum cycle provides clear coverage and progression, enabling pupils to revisit and consolidate key concepts through different contexts whilst continually moving their learning forward. Ongoing assessment is used to identify achievements, inform next steps and adapt teaching to meet the needs of individual learners.

Impact

The use of the Subject Pathways enables pupils in Rainbows and Moonbeams to make meaningful progress from their individual starting points, regardless of whether they are accessing learning through the Sensory Curriculum or National Curriculum pathways.

Pupils demonstrate increasing engagement in learning, improved communication and interaction skills, greater independence and growing confidence when faced with new experiences and challenges. They develop the knowledge and skills needed to access a wider curriculum and are able to apply their learning across different subjects and contexts.

Because learning is carefully sequenced and personalised, pupils build secure foundations before moving on to more complex learning. Those working within National Curriculum objectives outside of their chronological year group make strong progress towards age-related expectations, while pupils following Sensory Curriculum pathways demonstrate clear progression in engagement, communication, cognition, physical development and independence.

As a result, pupils access a curriculum that is both ambitious and inclusive. They develop the knowledge, skills and personal attributes needed to become successful learners, active participants in their communities and as independent as possible in their future lives.

Through the implementation of the Sensory Curriculum Subject Pathways, Rainbows and Moonbeams provide a curriculum that is responsive, progressive and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of need, starting point or pathway, are supported to achieve their full potential.
