Writing

At our school, we believe that effective communication is one of the most important skills a child can develop. Writing is a powerful tool that enables children to express their ideas, share their experiences and communicate with a range of audiences. Alongside writing, we place great importance on developing strong speaking and listening skills, recognising that oral language underpins successful written communication. Through discussion, storytelling, questioning and collaboration, children learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and confidently before translating them into writing.

We are committed to developing the physical skills needed for successful writing from the very beginning. Children are supported to develop fine motor control, pencil grip and letter formation, building the foundations for fluent and legible handwriting. As they progress through the school, they develop confidence and stamina as writers and learn to write in a joined handwriting style.

Our writing curriculum is carefully planned to inspire children and provide meaningful contexts for writing. We teach writing through high-quality models and examples, referred to as WAGOLLs (What A Good One Looks Like), enabling children to identify the features of successful writing and apply them in their own work. Writing is closely linked to our reading curriculum, with high-quality texts providing rich vocabulary, engaging ideas and authentic purposes for writing.

Children are explicitly taught the key skills and features required for different forms of writing, including narrative, poetry and a range of non-fiction genres. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught in context, allowing children to understand how these elements enhance clarity, meaning and impact in their writing. Through regular opportunities to practise, apply and refine their skills, children grow into confident, creative and purposeful writers who are prepared to communicate effectively both within school and beyond.
