Reading

Here at Severne Primary School we strive to make the children we teach passionate about reading and encourage them to understand the lifelong pleasure that reading can bring.

We equip children with the skills required to become confident and enthusiastic readers. In their first years at school the children follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme. They learn how letters and sounds correspond to one another and then eventually learn how to blend them together in order to read a word.

This approach known as ‘synthetic phonics’ occurs daily in the Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2. The diligent, concentrated and systematic teaching of phonics is central to the school’s high reading standards at the end of Key Stage 1 & 2. There are six phases in all and each new phase builds upon previous learning by adding new combinations of letters, known as digraphs. ‘Letters and Sounds’ sessions are fast paced, dynamic and typically last for no more than 20 minutes. A number of strategies and approaches are employed to enable the children, especially those in the Foundation Stage, to remember individual letters. 

By the time children have reached the end of Year 2 they will be confident and fluent readers who see reading as a pleasurable activity and are able to access all areas of the curriculum.
