Year 4

In Year 4, Mr Kelleher, Miss Malik and Mrs Shaw aim to provide a happy learning environment where all children are encouraged and engaged in their learning in order to reach their full potential. We are also fortunate to have on board Mrs Savage and Mrs Aktar.

The Phase Leader for Lower KS2 is Mrs Murfin.

Mornings in Year 4 are spent focussing on our Reading, English and Maths skills. In English and Reading we enjoy exploring a variety of text types, focussing inparticular on how they are organised and the grammar and vocabulary within them.

The new curriculum has provided us with some exciting topics for the afternoon sessions, with lots of practical activities to enjoy.

In Year 4 we are fortunate enough to receive instrumental tuition from the Schools Music Service.  One class learns to play a brass instrument such as the trumpet or trombone, and one class learns first the fife and then the flute.  We also do lots of activities to help us understand musical skills and vocabulary.

To help us with our thinking, planning and problem-solving skills, we have an hour of chess tuition each week and some of us are getting rather good at it!

ART

  

Year 4 have been working hard to recreate images by our local Birmingham artist, David Cox. This week they moved on to painting in his style, using watercolours.

CHESS

Children were introduced to a new chess piece: the bishop. We learnt that it can only move diagonally across the board. We then played against one another using the new pieces and the previous chess pieces we have been practicing with.

Children are thoroughly enjoying their new Geography topic on America! They have been locating and labelling cities in North and South America. Using an atlas and Google Earth. This week they are extending their knowledge through researching a specific city (New York and Rio De Janeiro) for each continent. Children were able to identify information such as: population, famous landmarks, rivers and the road pattern/layout. Next week, they will identify the similarities and differences between the two.

HISTORY

Year Four thoroughly enjoyed their topic on Roman Britain. They were given the opportunity to create their own Roman mosaics using the skill of block printing. In History, not only did they design and paint their own Roman shields but also reenacted the battle formations, using their shields!

MATHS

Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed measuring different objects in the classroom. Children had to investigate which measure of unit would be most suitable to use.

PHSE

Year Four visited the Life Education Caravan to learn about choices and how we can make the right choices. We learnt about making healthy choices with the food we eat with the help of Harold the giraffe.

SCIENCE

In this lesson, children were given equipment to make a switch. They then went on to create a simple circuit followed by adding the switch they made. Children investigated what happens to the lamp when the circuit is broken by opening the switch.

We carried out a pattern seeking investigation to test which materials are conductors or insulators. The pattern we noticed was that metals are conductors. Plastic, wood and rubber objects are insulators. We had a great time adding the different materials to our circuits!

Children were challenged to build a circuit without real wires! They used their knowledge on conductors and insulators to come to a decision.

We had a great visit from the local firefighters (Deano, Mauly, Sean and Scott) at Hay Mills Fire station. They taught us the importance of escape routes, smoke alarms and not making haux calls. We didn’t get chance to thank them for coming in as they had to make a quick exit because they had an emergency come through on their radio. Thank you for coming in to see us!

We are fast approaching the end of our topic of electricity. What better way to end the unit than create an electrical game using our expert knowledge of circuits and components!

  

Sound topic: we thought about what we knew about sound and had a great time observing how sounds are created through vibrations. The tuning forks felt extremely tingly when we touched them after hitting them on a hard surface. The drum had a short sound and the guitar had a long sound. Because of our music lessons, we knew about pitch. We noticed that the thin strings on a guitar had a high pitch and the thick strings had a high pitch! So much discussion in one lesson…

We have been investigation involved melting. We looked at three different types of chocolates and their properties to see which would melt the quickest and why. We used ipads to time the melting rates and thermometers to measure the temperature of the water. We decided to repeat this investigation as we decided it wasn’t a fair test: water seeped into the trays holding the chocolate and the timings weren’t accurate. Therefore we didn’t have accurate results.
